A new challenger appears! [Jun. 27th, 2010|11:34 pm]
[mood |anxiousanxious]
[music |Aviatik- Hail, Hail (The Bride's in Jail)]

It's been a month since my last update, and for that I sincerely apologize. Summer always sucks for me, and the last two weeks have been especially depressing and shitty. I've been spending so much time on the computer looking for work that my right hand has stopped working again. Also, I hate drawing vehicles, and every time I sat down to do the backgrounds on this page, I got annoyed and put it off for another day. A month between updates is unacceptable, though, and I promise to do better from now on... for the tenth time...

One page uploaded tonight. I always hate coming back from a long absense with a page that just sets something up and isn't really funny or anything, but that's what happened. Drew and Holly make me chuckle a little, but that's about it. Astute readers will probably recognize the new character from the opening of the Jack and Hawkins issue, and obsessive compulsive readers will probably have noticed her in the backgrounds of ten or so panels between then and now. Speaking of backgrounds, the ones on this page look like shit, and I'm counting down the panels until I can have that damn truck spontaneously explode and be done with drawing it forever. Why must my characters keep stealing vehicles when they know I can't draw them at all? Bastards.

I'll really try to have the next page up by Friday, Sunday at the latest, but this week might be really busy for me, so I can't promise anything. That Gallery update I've been mentioning for a year now is coming eventually. I'll try to get some sketches up with the next update, but it's been a low priority for me for a while now. Anyway, update next weekend, hopefully. Until then! ^_^"

No cop, no stop! [May. 31st, 2010|02:50 pm]
[mood |tiredtired]
[music |Kazzer- Pedal to the Metal]

One page uploaded today. I know I said I'd have two, but I had to destroy the second page three-fourths of the way through due to shittiness. It's been happening a lot lately, possibly because I'm becoming even more of a hack, possibly because I've started demanding too much quality from my god-awful stick figure comics... First page of the new issue. It kind of makes me giggle. I wonder if I'll ever add a cast member who isn't a menace to society behind the wheel. The backgrounds look decent, I guess, and the truck didn't turn out as shitty as the cars I try to draw always do.

As it turns out, the Mead Corporation has decided it no longer wants to produce decent quality notebook paper, opting instead for the same low-end bullshit every other company uses, which makes my pens bleed and falls apart if you color in large sections with black ink. Fortunately, I still had a piece of the awesome paper I used to use, and I made some copies of it with my scanner. It's kind of sad to see the lengths to which this god-awful comic has driven me just for notebook paper.

I'm going to try to move back to Friday updates starting this week. I'm tired of being too busy to draw on weekends and updating on Mondays. Mondays suck. Hopefully I can bang out the next page in four days. Until Friday! Maybe! ^_^"

The Seven Faces of a Late Update! [May. 23rd, 2010|12:51 am]
[mood |soresore]
[music |Rise Against- Savior]

No update last weekend, and no update this weekend. I suck, I know. Last weekend, I was still a day behind like I have been for a month, and I realized I wouldn't have today to work on the comic due to an out-of-town family get-together, so my plan was to skip last week's page and get a double update out yesterday. However, some real-world stuff came up and sucked up the last three days of my life more or less completely, so I've got nothing for you. I'm really sorry about this. Barring any unforeseen problems, I should have a double update for you next weekend. Until then! ^_^"

Attack of the Cursed Update! [May. 10th, 2010|10:42 pm]
[mood |aggravatedaggravated]
[music |Metallica- Hero of the Day]

One page uploaded today. I'm sorry it's a day late again, but this one gave me some problems. The tips on my pens are starting to split, so the text is more illegible than usual, and the speech bubbles look even worse than normal. That's not to mention the entire panel I had to replace by copying and pasting a new panel on top of it... Literally, I pasted a new panel over the old one with a glue stick. I'll let you guess which one that might be... This page makes me giggle a little, so I guess it's slightly better than last week's aborted effort. Nothing funny going on in the backgrounds or anything, and I guess they turned out all right, so I don't have much else to say about this one.

The reason I haven't had anything for the Gallery for the last few weeks is that I've been trying to rest my right hand, which I'm seriously afraid might have carpal tunnel. The pictures I want to upload require coloring in Photoshop, which would kick my wrist's fuckin' ass... if wrists had asses... which would be really weird...

This page wraps up the current issue. I have two options. I can either go forward with the next issue, or I can post a silly little two-page comic starring Ska-Bot I've been wanting to do for years now. I'm still not sure. As this is the about the midpoint of the comic, give or take an issue or two-- yes, I do have an ending planned, it's just taking me a lifetime to get there-- it seems like an appropriate place for a short little piece of horrifying nonsense, but I'd also really like to get started with Issue Thirteen while I'm on a relative roll... I'll flip a coin or something. In either case, see you next weekend! ^_^

With apologies to Akira Toriyama [May. 3rd, 2010|05:57 pm]
[mood |soresore]
[music |The Clintons- Fan of the Bean]

Two pages uploaded today. I wanted to get them done over the weekend and start a long series of reliable updates, but... maybe next weekend will be the one. ^_^" The first one wraps up what I laughingly call the plot. I think it's the first time I managed to squeeze some funny randomness into the painfully poorly written dialogue. Why the hell did I think it would be a good idea to create a character with seven-foot-long shiny red hair? It's a pain in the ass to color with just a ballpoint pen. Other than that, not much to say about that page.

The second page was based on a WTWTHO I wanted to do way back when I was working on a fleshed-out version of the first issue. The only thing I changed was the punchline-- or lack thereof. After I finished the page, I realized that although the last panel is amusing to me, it's not really a punchline... No one in this god-forsaken town carries Jones Soda anymore. Troy is not pleased... Anyway, Super Saiyan Troy is something I've been wanting to cram into the comic somehow since high school... Say what you will about Dragonball Z, it's probably the most influential animated show ever, and it sure as hell influenced me when I was first starting out with anime... Not much else to say. I guess it turned out all right. Hopefully next week's WTWTHO has an actual joke to tell.

Until the weekend! ^_^

The Mid-Week Update of Yucca Flats [Apr. 27th, 2010|01:53 pm]
[mood |stressedstressed]
[music |Live- I Alone]

Last weekend's update will be uploaded this weekend along with this week's page, probably on Saturday. I might have a Gallery update as well. Sorry about missing another update, but between babysitting and helping with a baby shower, I didn't have much time to work on the comic last weekend, and my desk keeps getting hijacked by people who need the computer. These things happen. The comic relaunch hasn't been very consistent, has it? Sorry about that. I really need to work on my professionalism... or my amateur professionalism, I guess. Hopefully this weekend will be the first in a long, unbroken string of reliable and entertaining updates.

Until this weekend! ^_^"

Behold the Horrors of a Timely Update! [Apr. 18th, 2010|11:59 pm]
[mood |tiredtired]
[music |Social Distortion- Reach for the Sky]

One page uploaded tonight, just under the midnight wire. I'm actually on time for a change... or at least as on time as you can be when your deadline is a 72-hour window... Anyway, I don't have a whole lot to say about this page. The characters all look good, especially Angelique and her ridiculous hair. I got a little lazy with the backgrounds, not going to the trouble of drawing the hideous purple bedspread and curtains you find in every single motel room in the country behind Angelique, but I think the annoying wall of poorly written text distracts from how mediocre they look. This page is boring, but hopefully the last panel makes up for it a little. One more page this issue, then two or three WTWTHOs.

The last panel reminds me that I once thought about adding another series of one-page comics between issues called Troy and Drew: Dickin' with Time, where Troy and Drew ruin history, but there aren't many original time travel jokes left, and there's not much I can do to top a character watching his parents conceive him in terms of disturbing, god-awful black humor.

Anyway, I'll have the last page next weekend. I'm aiming for a double update, but don't get your hopes too high. Remember, I do suck. Until next weekend! ^_^

Attack of the Really Sucky Cartoonist! [Apr. 8th, 2010|05:07 pm]
[mood |uncomfortablesorry]
[music |Lucky Boys Confusion- Fred Astaire]

I suck. That's the only satisfying explanation for why this update is two weeks late. A lot of things came up to kill my motivation or suck up my time, but the biggest reason is that I suck, plain and simple. I'm really sorry about that.

Anyway, one page uploaded today. You can probably tell how rusty I am just by looking at the text formatting and dialogue balloon shapes. The backgrounds were a bitch to draw, and that's part of why this comic took so much longer than I was hoping it would. I spent at least five hours on the backgrounds, and even with all that time, they still look pretty lame. I ended up squeezing a few (hopefully) amusing moments in, but this and the next couple of pages are basically the boring kind that push the ridiculous, boring plot forward. I wish I could've come back with something hilarious, offensive, or mindfucky, but this issue already exceeded its quota in all three categories.

I also added a new profile picture for O'Murray. I like this one a lot better than his old one. His uniform is a lot less fruity now. The shading isn't great, but overall I think it looks good considering how out of practice I am. I need to update a few more, namely Troy, Drew, Ska-Bot, and a new character I'll be introducing next issue, so hopefully I can get some of them done soon. I also need to add some more characters to the front page image, which I hope will have the entire cast by the time I'm done with it. I want to add God and Satan next, but I'm having trouble with the pose I want for God.

There won't be an update this weekend, as I haven't started the next page yet and will be busy all day Saturday. Updates will resume next weekend, probably on Saturday the 17th. I'm resuming weekly updates, and I plan to keep them up from now on. If I'm late on one, please get on my ass about it and make me regret it. Well, until next time! ^_^

Return of the Living Dead Webcomic! [Mar. 18th, 2010|03:53 pm]
[Current Location |Austintown]
[mood |depressedunmotivated]
[music |Mark Morrison- Return of the Mack]

Well, not a return per se, just an update on where things stand... Sorry if I got your hopes up.

All right, so I haven't updated since August, and I've basically stopped drawing altogether since then. I've just recently gotten back into drawing things, practicing basic shapes and inking sketches I've had sitting around for the last seven months collecting dust. It's amazing how rusty you get after half a year of inactivity, especially when your meager skill is only due to ten years of practice and not any natural talent. Basically, there are three things that have kept me from getting anything creative accomplished all this time. 1) I have no place to draw at this house. My current desk has barely enough room for a piece of paper, and it wobbles when you so much as think about it. Not a good drawing desk. 2) I've had zero motivation. I've always had schoolwork and/or a job to keep my general desire to do things up enough to want to draw and write, but with nothing to do but fruitlessly search for work, I've had absolutely no motivation to do anything. Basically, when I'm active with other things, I have the energy and desire to draw. When I have absolutely nothing to do, I tend to become listless and unfocused. 3) I was sort of feeling burned out with the comic after moving back to Austintown, and the feeling didn't go away until very recently.

So, I'm getting back to updating weekly next weekend, God willing, probably Saturday. There are only two or three not-very-funny pages left in the current issue, then two or three WTWTHOs. I hate to come back after all this time with pages that aren't funny, since the comic's plot is not its strong point and all, but I can't avoid it without dragging the issue out with three extra pages of filler. Hopefully I can make the WTWTHOs funny enough to justify the wait... but I doubt it.

I have decent ideas for four different superhero comics, and I'd love to work on one alongside The Kids Aren't All Right, but my track record with managing two comics at once is complete shit. One of the ideas is only a one-shot deal, one issue about the world's only superhero, whose only super power is invulnerability and who is batshit insane from being knocked around so much. The style I have in mind is a high-contrast black-and-white one that wouldn't require the time-consuming coloring and Photoshop shading that doomed Flaw long ago, so it's something I think I might actually be able to pull off on the side. We'll see.

Long post short: I'm updating the comic next weekend, barring some unforeseen time-consuming annoyance. Until then! ^_^

Shameless self-indulgence! [Aug. 5th, 2009|12:37 pm]
[mood |busybusy]
[music |Barenaked Ladies- It's Only Me (The Wizard of Magicland)]

One page uploaded today. I'm sorry this one is so late, but I had a lot of trouble with it. For one thing, I really suck at likenesses, and it took me about an hour to draw every panel with the Barenaked Ladies in it, not to mention the time the backgrounds took. For another, the backgrounds got worse and worse as I worked on them. Yeah, I'm not happy with the backgrounds on this page, and truth be told, the Ladies look pretty bad, too. Alas. I figured it would make Drew laugh, though, so at least that's something. This issue is winding to a close pretty soon, probably in three pages. I'll be sad to see it go. I had a lot of fun drawing it.

Also, the Barenaked Ladies are awesome. Anyone who disagrees is wrong and a faggot.

No update next weekend, as I'll be in Austintown for a wedding. No update the weekend after, either, because I'm moving out of my apartment. The server will be down for a few days while I move, but I'll try to get it up and running again as soon as I can, hopefully with new material for your enjoyment. The next few weeks are going to be crazy busy, so I apologize if it's a while before my next update, but these things happen.

Until we meet again, my friends! ^_^
